Baptism of Desire, The Loophole For The Modernist
|
The Baptism of Christ Paris BorDone 1500-1571

Liberals and modernists of today love to use the term,"Baptism of Desire", as a way of rejecting a
defined doctrine of the Church. As we know, Holy Baptism is the entrance to the Church. We also
know that Outside the Church there is no salvation or remission of sins. So how can those, who are
weak in their faith, say that Jews, Muslims, Hindu's and Protestants can be saved without Christ and
His Sacrament of Baptism? We have created a loophole, Baptism of Desire. It began with explicit
desire to be baptized. Now it has reached the stage of implicit desire meaning, that a person , even if
they never heard of Baptism, if they are" Good" people, would want Baptism if they knew of it and
therefore can somehow be saved. So they clam these people are actually Catholic but just don't know
it! It is so sad to see how far people will go to reject a defined dogma and our Lord's own words "
Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost he shall not enter the Kingdom of God."
(St. John 3:5). We must keep in mind that Baptism of Desire is not a Sacrament. No Pope, Council, or
theologian says that Baptism of Desire incorporates one into the Church. Also no Pope, Council or
theologian says that this desire is a sacrament.
So without contradicting the Defined Dogma, " No Salvation Outside the Church" we can say that
Baptism of Desire actually means:
" In its proper meaning, this consists of an act of perfect contrition of perfect love
( that is charity, which necessarily implies that one has the True Faith ), and the simultaneous desire
for baptism. It does not imprint an indelible character on the soul and the obligation to receive
Baptism by water remains."

Emphasis ours.
So lets not pretend that the whole world has this Baptism of Desire. Water Baptism is needed for
salvation because this and only this incorporates one into Holy Mother the Church. Lets not mock our
Lord's own words. It could put one in the state of Justification, assuming one has the true faith.
However, Justification and Salvation are two different things as the Council of Trent defined. Our Lord
Himself stated that He was being Baptized by John to " Fulfill all justice" (Matt 3:14-15)Have faith in
Jesus's own words! Unfulfilled justice is the state of Justification, fulfilled Justice is that state of
salvation!
I end this with a quote from the Council of Vienne:
" All the faithful must confess only one Baptism, which regenerates in Christ all the baptized, just as
there is one God and one faith. We believe that this Sacrament , celebrated in water, is necessary
for children and grown-ups alike for the perfect remedy of salvation."
